[WT논평] Back to an overprotective nanny state

Tragedies usually happen only on college campuses, and this concerns responsible presidents, chancellors, deans and administrators, and in England one university is taking steps to do something about it. Such campus compassion is likely to spread to schools on this side of the Atlantic. Contagious diseases, like Superman, easily leap over oceans in a single bound. Academics are particularly concerned lest certain “triggers,” often pulled by well-meaning but careless professors, inflict damage on delicate psyches.

Archaeology students at University College of London now have the right to leave the classroom with neither demerit nor damage to grade, when the classroom discussion turns to unpleasant topics, such as digging up old bones.

“Trigger alerts” are already common on many campuses, both in the United States and in certain European countries, but usually the professor merely warns that something bad is coming ― perhaps an alert that wounded soldiers sometimes bleed or that puppies have been known to puddle the floor ― but University College breaks new ground.

Students in the course called “Archaeologies of Modern Conflict” will henceforth not only be told that something upsetting is coming, “even traumatizing,” but will be permitted to leave the room until the professor moves on to something more pleasant, like lunch. If they feel particular stress, scholars can leave “without penalty,” and catch up later by copying the notes of another student, presumably with the permission of the other student.

Not every academic is on board. Chris McGovern, chairman of a counter-advocacy group called Campaign for Read Education says “We are back to an overprotective nanny state.”

대학 강의실을 지배하는 유모국가

여러 가지 비극은 일반적으로 오직 대학 교정에서만 일어나고 이런 사태는 책임 있는 총장, 학장, 교무처장의 우려사항이 되고 있으며 영국에서는 한 대학교가 그에 대해 어떤 대책을 취하기 위해 몇 가지 수단을 쓰고 있다. 그런 교정의 연민은 대서양의 이쪽에 있는 학교로 확산될 가능성이 있다. 전염성이 있는 각종 질병은 슈퍼맨처럼 한달음에 대양을 쉽사리 뛰어넘는다. 의도는 좋지만 부주의한 교수들이 종종 당기는 특정한 ‘트리거’, 즉 방아쇠가 민감한 마음의 소유자들에게 상처를 입히지 않도록 교수들은 특히 관심을 기울인다.

유니버시티 칼리지 오브 런던의 고고학 수강생들은 강의실의 논의가 오래된 뼈의 발굴 같은 불쾌한 내용을 주제로 삼을 때 벌점이나 학점의 감점을 받지 않고 강의실을 나갈 권리를 현재 행사한다.

‘트리거 얼러트’는 미국과 몇몇 특정 유럽 국가의 많은 대학 교정에서 이미 보편화되어 있으나 일반적으로 교수는 부상한 병사들이 간혹 피를 흘린다든가 혹은 강아지가 마룻바닥에 오줌을 싼다는 사실 등 좋지 않은 내용이 나온다는 것만 단순히 경고하지만 유니버시티 칼리지는 신기원을 연다.

‘현대 분쟁의 고고학’이란 명칭의 강의를 듣는 대학생들은 지금부터, 속상하게 하거나 ‘심지어는 큰 충격을 주는’ 내용이 나온다는 말을 들을 뿐만 아니라 교수가 점심 같은 보다 유쾌한 내용으로 옮겨갈 때까지 강의실을 나가는 것이 허용될 것이다. 만약 대학생들이 특별한 스트레스를 느낄 경우 학자들은 ‘처벌 받지 않고’ 떠날 수 있으며 다른 학생의 공책을 베낌으로써 나중에 강의 내용을 따라갈 수 있다. 이런 경우에는 아마도 다른 학생의 승낙이 필요할 것이다.

모든 교수가 동조하는 것은 아니다. ‘읽기 교육 운동’이란 명칭의 옹호반대단체 의장인 크리스 맥거번은 “우리는 과잉보호하는 유모국가로 돌아가고 있다”고 말한다.
